Its More Than Just Engineering than Darren Learns from Northumbria’s Engineering Programme!

Singaporean Darren Goh is one of the top students for the first batch of students who sat for their first examinations in May 2004 for Northumbria University’s Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) in Electrical and Electronics Engineering programme held in Singapore.  This batch of students sat for their first two examinable modules – Embedded Systems & Digital Systems Design (EN313) and Electronic Circuit Design & Manufacture (EN318).  The next 2 examinable modules will be in this December 2004.

Darren was really surprised and of course delighted and excited to know that he is one of the top students for May’s exams.  By knowing that he is amongst the top, it has not only made him feel good but also spurred him on for better results.

Darren chanced upon the programme offered by Informatics when he was looking around for a suitable Engineering related Degree course which could fit into his working schedule and interest. He said, “As Engineering is a wide field, there comes a point which will call for some specialisation.  I am particularly interested in the field of DSP and knowing Embedded System, which naturally becomes my choice of preferred specialisation. It is then I saw Informatics advertisement on the newspaper which gave me that push and of course after I researched about Northumbria University (UK).”

When asked what prompted him to sign up for the Engineering programme by Northumbria University, he had  this to elaborate, “Comparing with NUS and NTU degree courses which I had been monitoring closely, I could have a shorter course duration and of course at a relatively affordable course fees. Moreover, NUS and NTU Engineering subjects are extensive which is good for someone who is new to Engineering. I believe in life long learning, and I believe in concentration and best retention effect when you are learning something which you are interested in.

“I was able to juggle my studies well as my family, friends and company had been very accommodating and supportive when they knew that I was taking up this programme. Although I did not opt for a company sponsorship but my company, Yokogawa Electric Asia, a Process Control Industry Manufacturing Plant located in Singapore with the only Yokogawa Distributed Control System Manufacturer in the World has been very supportive throughout my whole programme.  In fact, all of them wishes me well and hope to see great result from me,” said Darren.

The knowledge Darren gained from the programme allowed him to have a better overall view of Product Development from Conceptualisation, Design to the Mass Production.  It also gave him the benefits and opportunity of exploring firmware designing and circuit designing details.  Initially, Darren was rather fearful as it had been years since he last stepped into a formal classroom as a student and subjecting himself to grades and study pressures again as he was usually the one teaching previously. My peers had been very friendly and jovial and these help in a way to ease my fears.

Darren gave a remark of “Of Course” when asked if he would this recommend this course to his friends or colleagues.  He added on to say, “The Final Year Project by itself is a test of both discipline and capability. To me, it is this Final Year Project that differentiates itself from the other part-time Engineering programme.  Moreover, it is through this Final Year Project when each individual can directly shape their learning journey.

Congratulations Darren! All the best for your next exams!
