Informatics Whips Up Impact in Certified Ethical Hacker Seminar at the University of Indonesia

An overwhelming 700 participants attended the Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH) seminar at the University of Indonesia’s (UI’s) two separate campuses in Jakarta.  These participants were senior students of UI, the university’s faculty members as well as IT professionals and other office professionals from all over Jakarta and other provinces of Indonesia. Informatics Professional Development Centre (IPDC) Jakarta collaborated with the prestigious University of Indonesia to host a 2-hour seminar at UI’s Depok and Salemba campuses consecutively on Aug. 19 and Aug. 20.

The goal of that seminar was to build awareness among IT enthusiasts to become “Ethical Hackers” as opposed to “Criminal Hackers”.  With the exponential increase of Internet usage and the shift of companies and institutes from being closed networks to being Internet-based, Computer or IT Security has become a main concern to many. Hacking in particular is the leading threat in such an environment. To understand this risk, system administrators, developers, and even managers of Information Technology  require the understanding of hacking, how it is done, and what techniques are employed to infiltrate systems and networks. One can say that: “Knowledge of hacking is vital for protection.”  And this is very real in Indonesia where banks and multinational companies proliferate the business milieu.

The speaker for the day was Mr. Desmond Alexander, an ethical hacker and an IT security professional himself. Mr. Desmond enlightened the participants on how to prepare themselves to defend their network against hacker. He illustrated his points by showing the participants examples of knowledge and tools used by a malicious hacker.

IPDC Jakarta is the exclusive CEH training partner of EC-Council in the whole of Indonesia.  EC-Council or the International Council of Electronic Commerce Consultants, is a professional organisation established in the United States with headquarters in New York.

“This seminar has given me a clear picture on how a hacker works and the methodologies that he uses to gain access to a website to do damage to it. I am beginning to get interested to learn more about IT security issues and hopefully I could apply my knowledge in my work activities in the future. With the increasing alarming numbers of government websites being hacked in Indonesia, I think people should be more aware, especially in the banking sector.” - Mr Aryanto Salim

“As there are a few professional “Ethical Hackers” in Indonesia, IT Security is becoming a necessity not only in the banking sector but also in big companies and government agencies. Therefore, the Ethical Hacking seminar jointly sponsored by Univ of Indonesia and Informatics IPDC was very informative and interesting. I’ve gained a lot of information on how to safely protect myself when surfing on the net and also tips on how to ethically hack a website. I would be able to install proper security codes to websites to keep it safe from hacker attacks.” – Mr Ricky Wijaya

“With the rapid changes in today’s computer technology, we must constantly keep ourselves up-to-date and practice precaution in protecting ourselves from unnecessary hacker attacks.  This seminar has proven to be very useful as Informatics shares some of the hackers’ methods to us. It has given me an in-depth idea on what’s happening in today’s fast paced IT world.” - Mr Raymond Kurniawan
