Objectives
On successful completion of the DBA
programme students will be able to:
- apply relevant theoretical knowledge
to contemporary business problems;
- critique contemporary organisational

Programme Structure
Module Structure
The Doctor of Business Administration
is a 24-unit program comprising 16 units
of coursework and 8 units of research.
Students are required to undertake:
- All requirements for the Master of
Business Administration (8 units of
core courses plus a four-unit specialisation, or four units of courses selected from the lists
of courses available in the MBA specialisations,
as approved by the Director, USQ Australian
Graduate School of Business), which
must be completed successfully before
progressing further in the DBA program;

Accounting for Managers (FOBUS)
This course, available to postgraduate
students only, aims to provide an understanding
of the accounting concepts used in the
interpretation of accounting reports and
financial statements which are prepared
to assist effective management of a business
entity. Managers should recognise their information requirements on which relevant decisions
are based. Planning, control and decision-making
capabilities will be developed. Investment
and Finance decisions and the Management
of Working Capital will be discussed.

Management and Organisational Behaviour
(FOBUS)
All students undertaking graduate studies
in Business need to appreciate and understand
the nature of organisational
behaviour. They should also be able to articulate behavioural issues in business situations. This course provides a
framework in which students are exposed
to a range of theories and experiences
within the field of organisational
behaviour which will allow
them to further develop insights, attitudes
and skills to a level consistent with
the expectations for senior management.
The course aims to provide an understanding
of the behaviour of people
at work. It analyses behaviour
at the individual, group and organisational
levels. Managers must understand the complex
interactions that influence the effectiveness
of different management strategies and
organisational structures
under different environmental and technological
conditions. As well as reviewing the current
theories and research in the area, the
course uses case studies to examine the
implications for practising
managers.

Economics for Managers (FOBUS)
Economics for Managers provides the manager
with an understanding of economics and
its role in managerial decision making.
The course is focused on modern economic
thinking and its relevance to business
and management. Macroeconomic and microeconomic
topics are covered. Interesting cases
and recurring themes are a feature of
the course. Time devoted to assessment
has been shortened so that students can
devote maximum time to study and understanding
economics

LAW5503 Australian Law and Business (FOBUS)
In order to introduce students to the
impact of law on business, this course
looks at the Australian legal system and
the courts (eg: the way in which legal decisions are made and their significance).
It also covers in some detail areas of
the law relevant to business, such as
contract law (including agency law), selected
topics from the law of torts, remedies,
aspects of the law relating to some of
the main business structures, aspects
of property law and aspects of bankruptcy
law.

Comparative Law and Business (FOBUS)
Students will gain an overview of similarities
and differences between selected legal
systems, in so far as these impact on
business transactions. Particular issues
to be discussed include the law of contracts,
business structures and property in a
variety of legal systems.

Information Systems for Managers (FOBUS)
This course examines the trend in the
use of computer systems away from data
processing and towards information processing,
particularly towards that type of decision
support required to guide corporate strategy.
The strategic implications of information
systems are analysed, and
students are guided through current developments
in the planning, development, implementation,
and maintenance of various types of information
systems, especially decision support systems.
Both hardware and software technologies
are studied from the perspective of management
in relation to the need of corporations
to maintain a competitive edge in a complex
and changing environment. Various development
methodologies currently used in information
systems are compared. The developments
in the area of electronic commerce are
also assessed. A number of current issues
are discussed and extensive reading of
both the text and current articles is
required.

Decision Support Tools (FOBUS)
The course aims to enhance the ability
of managers to make decisions by formulating
real world problems, often featuring ambiguity,
in a manner which allows the application
of quantitative management tools. The
generalised approach of problem formulation, modelling, solution, interpretation and implementation will be addressed.
The course will deal with the issues of
data reduction, inference testing, forecasting,
decision analysis, scheduling, location
and layout decisions, Just-In-Time, project
management and quality management.

Marketing Management (FOBUS)
The course highlights the need for managers
to view the role of marketing as a vital
managerial concern. The importance of
a marketing perspective will be examined
through the use of case studies in both
domestic and international environments
on the basis of empirical evidence. At
the completion of the course students
will be able to analyse
the changing marketing environment, engage
in creative market-oriented thinking,
and be aware of the interplay between
marketing and the other managerial functions
of the firm. The crucial role of marketing
in contributing to the success of organizations
is emphasised.

Strategic Management (FOBUS)
As students draw closer to meeting the
full requirements for graduating from
the course, it is absolutely essential
that they have the opportunity to integrate
and synthesise the knowledge
and competencies developed to date in
relation to their professional and managerial
responsibilities. This course allows students
to identify and articulate the strategic
issues that organisations
are confronting. Students will be able
to draw upon some of the critical concepts,
techniques and information from other
courses studied in order to develop informative
and comprehensive responses to some of
the key questions encountered in the strategic
management of an organisation.
This course provides a framework for analysis
and integration by focusing attention
on the development of an organisation's
strategic directions, strategic capabilities
and internal and external dynamics.

Research Methodology 1 (FOBUS)
This course provides an introduction to
the methodology of research in the context
of business and commerce. The focus will
be on issues such as: topic selection,
problem definition, development of research
questions, theory construction, research
design, and selected data collection tools.
Additionally, students will be expected
to develop critical thinking skills and
the capacity to read and critique a research
article. The course is directed at research
students who wish to learn about designing
and conducting research in the disciplines
represented in business and commerce.
Students will be expected to develop an
understanding of the key components of
the research process, as well as the application
of research methods appropriate to particular
research questions.

The Changing Environment of Business (FOBUS)
This course has been designed to enhance
and build upon the general discipline
knowledge gained in graduate business
studies. It is about how the external
environment affecting business and how
businesses respond to the external pressures.
It also equips DBA students to build a
basis of advanced theory to undertake
a comprehensive piece of management-related
research. The course combines appropriate
theoretical issues with related applications
in practice. The structure of the course
provides a sound core of macro-environment
combined with the opportunity to explore
selected specialised areas in greater depth.

Research Methodology 2 (FOBUS)
This course is designed to provide students
with the capability to apply several research
methods associated with various business
disciplines. The focus will be on issues
such as: data preparation and analysis,
measurement and operationalisation
of variables, and bivariate analysis. In addition, students will choose advanced study
in one of the following areas: (a) regression
analysis, (b) other multivariate analysis,
or (c) qualitative analysis. The course
will also assist students to develop research
paper and proposal writing skills.

will normally focus on refining the research
proposal and will be decided in consultation
with the principal supervisor and course
leader. Students will submit the reworked

the current semester of enrolment.

B (FOBUS)
The second course in the eight-unit dissertation
will consist of the candidate formulating
the first Introductory chapter of the
dissertation, which may include inter
alia background to the research,
research problems, hypotheses or issues,
justification, delimitations, definitions
and terms according to the general DBA
guidelines. Students will submit the introductory
chapter which will carry 100% of the course
marks by Week 12 in the current semester
of enrolment.

C (FOBUS)
Under the general direction of the supervisor
in this third course of the eight-unit
dissertation, the candidate writes the
literature review chapter(s) of the dissertation.
Supervisors, course leader and candidate

this period. Students will submit the
literature review chapter(s) which will
carry 100% of the course marks by Week
12 in the current semester of enrolment.

D (FOBUS)
This fourth course in the eight-unit dissertation
will normally focus on the dissertation
methodology and may include inter alia
information on research paradigms, research
processes and the plan for data analysis.
Supervisors, course leader and candidate
will consult on an ongoing basis during
this period. Students will submit the
dissertation methodology chapter which
will carry 100% of the course marks by
week 12 in the current semester of enrolment.

E (FOBUS)
This course is a continuation of MGT9604
and a complement of MGT9606 that follows.
In these courses the candidate should
be at work on the basic substance of the
dissertation itself. The fifth course
in the eight-unit dissertation will normally
focus on preliminary data gathering and
analysis. Supervisors, course leader and
candidate will consult on an ongoing basis
during this period. Students will submit
evidence of data analysis to the satisfaction
of the supervisor, which will carry 100%
of the course marks by Week 12 in the
current semester of enrolment.

F (FOBUS)
This course is a continuation of the preliminary
data gathering and analysis for the dissertation.
The sixth course in the eight-unit dissertation
will normally focus on the writing the
Results chapter of the dissertation. Supervisors,

on an ongoing basis during this period.
Students will submit the final results
chapter which will carry 100% of the course
marks by Week 12 in the current semester
of enrolment.

Doctor of Business Administration Dissertation
G (FOBUS)
In this seventh course the candidate is
expected to write the final discussion
and conclusions chapter of the dissertation.
This chapter may inter alia
include an outline of findings, acknowledgement
of limitations, recommendations for future
research and applications in management
practice. Supervisors, course leader and
candidate will consult on an ongoing basis
during this period. Students will submit
the conclusion chapter which will carry
100% of the course marks by week 12 in
the current semester of enrolment.

Doctor of Business Administration Dissertation
H (FOBUS)
The final course in the eight-unit dissertation
will normally focus on re-writing, corrections
and revisions of all the chapters in the
dissertation. Supervisors, course leader
and candidate will consult on an ongoing
basis during this period. Supervisors
can recommend the acceptance of the dissertation
for external examination. Examiners may
require revisions, and a moderator will
verify if the student addressed the examiners'
requirements. The final grade for this
course will depend on the external examiners'
assessment of the dissertation.

Entry Requirements
Candidates for entry into the Doctor
of Business Administration must meet each
of the following entry criteria to the
satisfaction of the Director, USQ Australian
Graduate School of Business:
1. a
tertiary qualification at bachelor degree
or equivalent level from a recognised
institution; and
2. five
years full-time equivalent work experience,
including at least two years full-time
equivalent work experience in a managerial
position, as determined by the Director,
USQ Australian Graduate School of Business;
and
submission of a satisfactory preliminary
research proposal, as determined by the
Director, USQ Australian Graduate School
of Business and at least one senior member
of the Faculty's academic staff involved
in supervision of DBA dissertations.
Candidates for admission to the DBA programme
may be eligible for up to 12 units of
exemption in coursework on the basis of
successful completion of relevant, equivalent
postgraduate study from a recognised
university. In particular, candidates
who hold a Master of Business Administration
degree, or equivalent, from a recognised
university may be eligible for up to 12
units of exemption in coursework. However,
where previous study is not related to
the area of study indicated in the preliminary
research proposal, maximum exemptions
will not be approved.
Note: Where exemptions are granted, maximum
and minimum duration will be adjusted
in the same proportion as exemptions,
eg where the maximum of
12 exemptions is granted, maximum time
will be 4 years and minimum time will
be 3 terms.
Candidates exiting the DBA programme with
the Postgraduate Certificate in Business
Research are not eligible for exemptions
in the required courses.
