 About the Programme

  • In order to cater for the strong demand for non-accounting graduates and Associate/Advanced Diploma graduates to acquire professional accounting qualifications the Master of Professional Accounting (MPA) has been introduced. The programme comprises of 12 or 16 semester courses offered in the external mode.

Programme Structure

i. MPA 12
Applicants for admission to the 12 unit programme shall be holders of an approved degree in a non-accounting field, from USQ or another recognised university or tertiary institution, provided that such qualification is accepted by the Director, USQ Australian Graduate School of Business as sufficient for admission to the program, and is in accordance with professional body guidelines

ii. MPA 16
Applicants for admission to the 16 unit programme should satisfy one of the following options:

ACC5202 Accounting (FOBUS)
The course introduces students to the accounting process. This includes the environment of accounting, the accounting elements, transaction recognition and recording and the financial report presentation. Particular emphasis is placed on the recording measurement and control of the major asset groups and the identification, function and measurement of liabilities and owners' equity. The basic accounting process is then applied to a variety of reporting entity activities and owners' equity structures. Finally, the accounting process is extended to cash flow statements and the techniques of analysing and interpreting the information displayed in accounting reports.

LAW5201 Commercial Law (FOBUS)
This course is designed to introduce students to the impact of law on business. To do this it commences with a review of the components of the Australian legal system, the judicial process and the means by which disputes are resolved or litigated. Civil liability in contract law, negligence and other tortious actions are examined in some detail. Criminal law is also briefly covered as well as the law of agency.

ACC5213 Cost and Management Accounting (FOBUS)
This course focuses on the provision and use of management accounting information for planning, control and decision making. The course encourages an understanding of the management accounting function within an organisation by taking a business value chain perspective. The process of budgeting (operational and financial) and standards as an aid to management in planning and controlling business activities is explored. Also included is an analysis of cost behaviour, absorption and variable costing, a study of the principles of job and process costing systems, the application of activity based costing, as well as other facets of management accounting which support decision making.

ACC5215 Corporate Accounting (FOBUS)
This course is designed to enable students to acquire basic skills of company accounting. Topics covered include the application of accounting entries for setting-up a company, acquisition of assets; tax effect accounting; the presentation of accounts including consolidated statements for holding companies (including foreign subsidiaries); and equity accounting for associate companies

ACC5216 Accounting Theory (FOBUS)
This course involves the theory that is integral to financial accounting practice. Its primary objective is to enhance decision-making skills in relation to financial reporting issues. A framework for decision-making is provided. This includes an investigation of the popular theories and evidence in regard to financial reporting. The financial reporting issues addressed include the choice of accounting methods, voluntary disclosures, and environmental performance reporting.

ACC5218 Auditing Practice (FOBUS)
This course primarily deals with the process by which the external company auditor, within the Australian professional and legal framework, independently appraises and reports on the truth and fairness of the company's financial statements. The course is practice oriented and in keeping with the current trend in the auditing profession, a risk-based audit approach is emphasised. The course covers the audit of computerised systems as well as selected manual accounting systems. Limited 'hands-on' auditing experience is provided by requiring students to complete a case study as part of the assessment for the course.

LAW5206 Corporations Law (FOBUS)
The objective of this course is to introduce students to the legal principles associated with partnerships, associations, trusts and corporations. In particular, students will be exposed to the Partnership Act and Corporations Law in detail and shall be required to be able to describe all appropriate legal principles dealing with such entities and the internal and external relationships thereof.

LAW5230 Taxation Law (FOBUS)
In order to participate in the planning of a client's tax affairs it is necessary to understand the relevant sections of the appropriate taxation laws applicable to the transaction or entity structure. This course primarily introduces students to the Income Tax Assessment Act (ITAA) and the Goods and Services Tax Act 1999 (GSTA). Topics covered include assessable income, capital gains tax, allowable deductions, goods and services tax, classes of taxpayers, calculation of tax payable and offsets/rebates of tax, tax administration provisions and the taxation of business entities.

CIS5001 Information Systems for Managers (FOBUS)
This course examines the trend in the use of computer systems away from data processing and towards information processing, particularly towards that type of decision support required to guide corporate strategy. The strategic implications of information systems are analysed, and students are guided through current developments in the planning, development, implementation, and maintenance of various types of information systems, especially decision support systems. Both hardware and software technologies are studied from the perspective of management in relation to the need of corporations to maintain a competitive edge in a complex and changing environment. Various development methodologies currently used in information systems are compared. The developments in the area of electronic commerce are also assessed. A number of current issues are discussed and extensive reading of both the text and current articles is required.

MGT5001 Decision Support Tools (FOBUS)
The course aims to enhance the ability of managers to make decisions by formulating real world problems, often featuring ambiguity, in a manner which allows the application of quantitative management tools. The generalised approach of problem formulation, modelling, solution, interpretation and implementation will be addressed. The course will deal with the issues of data reduction, inference testing, forecasting, decision analysis, scheduling, location and layout decisions, Just-In-Time, project management and quality management.

ECO5000 Economics for Managers (FOBUS)
Economics for Managers provides the manager with an understanding of economics and its role in managerial decision making. The course is focused on modern economic thinking and its relevance to business and management. Macroeconomic and microeconomic topics are covered. Interesting cases and recurring themes are a feature of the course. Time devoted to assessment has been shortened so that students can devote maximum time to study and understanding economics.

FIN8101 Corporate Finance (FOBUS)
Financial management is one of the major functional areas within a corporation. Sound financial management is crucial to a corporation's solvency and long-term profitability. This course aims to introduce students to the basic responsibilities of a corporate financial manager. Coverage includes evaluation of investment and financing alternatives, working capital management, and determination of capital structure and dividend policy. Emphasis is placed on the analytical aspects of the decision making process to enable students to form their own judgment in the dynamic business world.

Entry Requirements

i. MPA 12
Applicants for admission to the 12 unit programme shall be holders of an approved degree in a non-accounting field, from USQ or another recognised university or tertiary institution, provided that such qualification is accepted by the Director, USQ Australian Graduate School of Business as sufficient for admission to the program, and is in accordance with professional body guidelines

ii. MPA 16
Applicants for admission to the 16 unit programme should satisfy one of the following options:

a. Admission Requirements Option 1
Applicants must have:

1.      Successfully completed an accredited post year 12 qualification equivalent to at least two years full-time study provided that such qualification is accepted by the Director, USQ Australian Graduate School of Business, as sufficient for admission to the program and is in accordance with professional body guidelines; plus

2.      Completed a minimum of at least two years relevant work experience.

b. Admission Requirements Option 2

3.      Applicants must have completed a minimum of at least five years relevant work experience.

4.      Students who enter the MPA (16 unit) under Option 2 shall be required to:

i) Enrol in the (Executive) Graduate Certificate in Commerce by completing the following four courses:
a. ACC5202 Accounting
b. LAW5201 Commercial Law
c. FIN8101 Corporate Finance
d. CIS8100 e-Business Strategy

ii) Upon successful completion of these four courses students shall then articulate into the Master of Professional Accounting (16 unit). The four courses completed under the Executive Graduate Certificate in Commerce shall contribute toward 16 courses of the Master of Professional Accounting. Course CIS8100 e-Business Strategy will contribute towards the elective component of the Master of Professional Accounting.

  • Professional Accreditation
    i. The programme satisfies the initial educational entrance requirements of both CPA Australia and the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia (ICAA).

ii. Local Recognition (for overseas students):

1. For overseas candidates seeking membership of their home accounting bodies, full members of CPA Australia and/or ICAA are usually offered reciprocal membership.

2. This is a fast track to become a qualified accountant in one's home country.

  • Exemptions
    i. As the Master of Professional Accounting is a graduate conversion programme, exemptions approved in the program do not automatically apply to other postgraduate programs offered by the USQ Australian Graduate School of Business.

ii. Candidates for the 12-course Master of Professional Accounting may be eligible for up to six courses of exemptions on the basis of completed equivalent postgraduate study from a recognised university.

iii. Candidates for the 16-course Master of Professional Accounting may be eligible for up to eight courses of exemption on the basis of equivalent study completed at a recognised university.

iv. The maximum number of exemptions that will be considered in either programme on the basis of undergraduate study is four courses.
