Northumbria's international reputation as a leading British university is the result of a distinctive combination of outstanding academic research and teaching, innovative programmes, traditional values and social and cultural diversity. Since its foundation in the historic City of Newcastle upon Tyne, the University has developed into a successful regional, national and international institution.

Largest Regional University
By the year 2000 Northumbria University was the largest university in the North East of England, with a broad portfolio of courses and a rich cultural diversity in its student population. Northumbria has a student population of around 32,000 with 3,300 overseas students on our Newcastle campuses and a further 3,000 studying on University programmes in their own countries. Growth in recent years has been both impressive and carefully managed as part of the University’s overall strategic development and in the context of a careful review of our academic portfolio. Courses have been examined for their relevance and value to society and we are now offering programmes in all of the UK’s 30 most popular subjects. Northumbria is the leading provider of high-calibre graduates to business, industry and the professions in the North East of England and one of the highest nationally.

Academic Profile
Teaching and research activities are managed by nine schools including: Applied Sciences; Arts and Social Sciences; Built Environment; Business, Computing, Engineering and Information Sciences; Design; Health, Community and Education Studies, Law and Psychology and Sport Sciences.
The highest standards have been maintained, with an excellent result in a recent Institutional Audit by the Quality Assurance Agency. The professional standing of our programmes has been endorsed with accreditation from over 30 professional bodies. Northumbria’s success in learning and teaching is underpinned by a range of professional services, with award-winning support from the library, and a world class IT infrastructure providing wireless coverage throughout. Indeed 2006 saw Northumbria declared in a national competition as the ‘UK’s most IT-Enabled Organisation’.

Research and Enterprise
Research and enterprise activities are a major priority and the University today enjoys a significant number of commercial and professional collaborations and partnerships. Northumbria University is constantly developing corporate learning partnerships and levels of consultancy and training has seen a sustained increase in recent years.

The Estate
Since the start of this century, the University has consolidated its presence on two major campuses in Newcastle upon Tyne - one in the city centre and the other in a suburban location on the edge of the city, at Coach Lane. Clear academic success and financial growth has enabled the University to make significant investment in its estate, extending the City Campus on to a new site with two magnificent new buildings. The University is one of North East England's major employers. There is ongoing refurbishment of existing teaching facilities, walkways and shared spaces. The two city centre sites have been unified into one integrated campus with the building of an iconic footbridge across Newcastle’s central motorway.

The University has plans for further development, landscaping and pedestrianisation of its City Campus, improving the academic accommodation and creating a new £31m sports centre for the benefit of staff, students and members of the public. This outstanding facility is due to be completed in June 2010. These plans are integral to Northumbria’s ambition to be one of the world’s leading universities, renowned for the excellence of its research and teaching, the high quality of its student experience, its innovative research and professionally based practice and entrepreneurial flair which transforms the economic, cultural and social life of the communities it serves.

Oxford Brookes University is highly regarded, both within the UK and internationally, for its excellent teaching and growing research record. In 2009, Brookes won three highly regarded national teaching fellowships, and it also hosts two national centres of excellence in teaching and learning. It has been named the best modern university by the Sunday Times University Guide for nine years in a row.

‘At the heart of Brookes’ success is the excellent teaching on offer. A Russell Group-equalling 24 subjects were rated excellent.’
Sunday Times University Guide, 2009

Oxford Brookes has developed significant research strengths across the university, as confirmed in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (the latest official rankings of UK university research). More than three-quarters of its research was rated internationally recognised, with a broad range of subjects in the arts, sciences, health, law and education rated world-leading.

The university can trace its history back as far as 1865 with the foundation of the Oxford School of Art, which over the centuries merged and grew to become today’s university. It was in 1992 that the then Oxford Polytechnic became Oxford Brookes University, naming itself after John Henry Brookes, first Principal of the Schools of Technology, Art and Commerce.

Brookes’s location in Oxford means that it is right at the centre of the UK’s most successful economic region and it has strong links with industry and business through research and consultancy. Real-life skills are built into its courses to ensure that students develop the right skills for their chosen profession.

91% of its first degree leavers are in paid work or further study 6 months after graduation, making Brookes one of the top UK universities for employability.

Student satisfaction is also high, with 87% of undergraduate students in 2008 saying they would recommend the university to a friend. Two-thirds of Brookes students gain first or second class upper division honour degrees.

The University of Portsmouth is a leading modern university with a strong reputation for teaching and student satisfaction with notable research strengths. Many of our academics are international experts in their fields and our students can learn from specialists who are pushing forward the boundaries of knowledge.

3,000 plus staff support our 19,000 students, including 3,000 from over 100 countries. We offer superb facilities in a vibrant waterfront location – a university by the sea that's also in the heart of one of Britain's most historic cities.

The University is active in research and knowledge transfer across the spectrum of its activities. Areas of international excellence include the Institute of Biomedical and Biomolecular Sciences, the Centre for European and International Studies Research and the Institute of Cosmology and Gravitation. It is the only higher education institution serving this travel-to-learn area of over 300,000 people and works closely with schools and colleges to raise aspirations and encourage future generations to consider University education.

We want our students to have the best possible experience of University. In the 2008 National Students Survey our students rated us first out of all modern universities (88%), and highest of all south coast institutions for overall satisfaction. We are proud of our teaching record, receiving the highest possible rating in the most recent Quality Assurance Agency audit. More recently we received awards for excellence in teaching and learning, one of only 16 institutions to receive more than one award. This resulted in an extra £9million of funding.

The University has excellent links with industry and a strong record of student employability. We have a clear focus on Enterprise, and our Centre for Enterprise, established in 2000, aims to inspire Portsmouth students to learn and succeed in entrepreneurship, offering free training and mentoring to both graduates and current students. Four of our students have been awarded prestigious Kauffman scholarships - more than any other UK University.

Arts and Humanities are further areas of strength; our newly established Faculty of Creative and Cultural Industries meets the need for talented graduates of the fast-growing creative and cultural sector of the regional and national economy.

Founded by Royal Charter in 1893, the University of Wales is the degree-awarding body for the majority of higher education students in Wales, as well as for many at other higher education institutions in the United Kingdom and overseas.
The University’s position enables it to focus not only on its primary functions as a degree-awarding body and provider of services to the Welsh higher education sector but also, as a national institution, on playing an enhanced role in protecting and promoting the economy, culture and language of Wales.

Recently, the University has signed a memorandum of understanding with six of the university institutions in Wales, with whom it will be working closely on collaborative ventures, research groupings and other new initiatives.  These institutions are:

• Glyndŵr University
• Swansea Metropolitan University
• University of Wales Institute, Cardiff (UWIC)
• University of Wales, Newport
• University of Wales, Lampeter
• Trinity University College

The latter two institutions are set to merge in 2010 to become University of Wales, Trinity St David.

The University also maintains links with Aberystwyth University, Bangor University, Cardiff University and Swansea University.

The University is also the degree-awarding authority for more than 120 other higher education institutions both within the United Kingdom and overseas, with which it also enjoys close links.  Annually, it awards around 15,000 initial degrees and more than 4,000 higher degrees, making it the second largest degree-awarding body in the United Kingdom.  The number of students, from all over the world, pursuing University of Wales degrees is around 70,000, and their studies cover a wide range of subjects.

The University is a major national institution in Wales.  While it is, of course, committed to helping to fulfill the educational and economic needs of Wales and to supporting its linguistic, cultural, and national heritage, the University is also committed to its international role and to enhancing its standing across the UK and overseas.  As well as its validation role and the international projects undertaken by its Global Academy, the University sponsors a number of cultural initiatives, such as the prestigious Dylan Thomas Prize, for young writers, which attracts entries from all over the world.

University Centres and Services

The University of Wales Centre for Advanced Welsh and Celtic Studies is a dedicated research centre whose staff are engaged on major multidisciplinary research projects.  Its work has won universal acclaim and it has, in the past two years, attracted two of the largest grants ever made by the Arts and Humanities Research Council to a higher education institution in Wales.  In the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise the Centre received the accolade of having 35 per cent of its work rated as “world-leading” and 45 per cent as “internationally excellent”.  This result both recognised the exceptional research carried out by its staff and confirmed its status as an international centre of excellence for Welsh and Celtic Studies.

The University of Wales Press was set up by Statute of the University in 1922.  Within its educational mission it publishes dictionaries and reference works, as well as books for schools and for students.  It also aims to promote the development and expansion of Welsh culture through academic and educational publishing both in the Welsh language, and on Welsh topics in English.  Joint publication ventures are undertaken with national bodies in Wales, as well as with University Presses in North America.

Gregynog, the University’s study and conference centre in the Welsh countryside, is held in trust by the University under the terms of the will of the late Miss Margaret S Davies.  Standing in 750 acres of gardens and woodland, it provides residential accommodation for up to 100 people, and can host non-residential conferences for up to 200 people.  Gregynog’s primary purpose is to be a study and conferencing facility for university staff and students, but it also provides a commercial conference and hospitality service, as well as hosting an annual classical music festival.

The University of Wales Global Academy was formed with the purpose of helping to boost the economic performance and innovative capacity of Wales, enhance research excellence and capability and improve links between businesses and university institutions within Wales.

The first of the Academy’s initiatives, the Prince of Wales Innovation Scholarships, was formally launched by the Prince of Wales, the University’s Chancellor, in May 2009.  This ground-breaking programme matches the best students from around the world to cutting-edge research and development projects within Welsh companies, and to related university departments, thus providing unique industrial-based PhD scholarships.  Between 2009 and 2012 one hundred of these prestigious Prince of Wales Innovation Scholarships will be offered.

The second major programme within the Global Academy, The Prince of Wales Distinguished Visiting Professorships Programme, will provide awards to enable overseas-based distinguished senior industrialists and academics from some of the world’s leading technological and innovative organisations to spend between three and six months in Wales, working with companies, universities and government to increase open innovation culture.

Alumni Services
The University is fortunate to have, in its graduates, a host of ambassadors worldwide.  The work of its alumni organisation emphasises two focal points: the fostering of close communication for all the University’s graduates with each other, with the University and other organisations, and the provision of opportunities for co-operation between institution-based alumni groups, and for the promotion of each institution.  The development of services and activities, especially the modernisation and improvement of communication with all the University’s alumni, is a priority.

Online Library Service
